Semiconductor diodes are classified as the does that are composed of various semiconducting materials.

The negatively charged cathodes present in these diodes are accumulated with a vast number of electrons and this cathode is present adjacent to the anode that carries an unrestrained amount of positive charge from the holes.

A laser diode is a type of semiconductor device that emits coherent light through the process of stimulated emission. The diode is composed of a p-n junction, surrounded by two layers of semiconductor material. When a voltage is applied across the junction, electrons and holes are injected into the region, creating a population inversion.

There are several types of semiconductor diodes, including:

PN Junction Diode: This is the most common type of diode, which is formed by joining p-type and n-type semiconductors. It allows the current to flow in one direction, from the p-side to the n-side.

Schottky Diode: A Schottky diode is a metal-semiconductor junction diode, which has a lower forward voltage drop compared to PN junction diodes, thereby reducing the power loss.

Zener Diode: A Zener diode is designed to operate in reverse breakdown, which means it can tolerate a reverse voltage without getting damaged. It is commonly used as a voltage regulator.

Varactor Diode: Varactor diodes are used as variable capacitance elements in electronic circuits. Its capacitance changes with the applied reverse-bias voltage.

Tunnel Diode: A tunnel diode is a heavily doped p-n junction diode, which exhibits negative resistance due to tunneling effect. It is used in high-frequency oscillators and amplifiers.

PIN Diode: A PIN diode is a p-i-n structure diode, which has a lightly doped intrinsic (i) layer sandwiched between the p-type and n-type semiconductors. It has a larger depletion region, making it suitable for use in high-speed switching applications.
